Meet the Hidex team: Subash Luitel, a Software Developer at Hidex
September 16, 2024
Subash Luitel has been working as a Software Developer at Hidex for over a year now, with his primary focus on writing the program for the LSC counter Hidex ULLA instrument software. Despite having previous experience in the medical device industry, Subash finds that there’s still much to gain understanding about Hidex instruments.
Background and Journey to Finland
Subash moved to Finland in 2007 to pursue his bachelor’s degree at Vaasa University of Applied Sciences VAMK. Born and raised in the Nepalese capital, the first move in his life was from Kathmandu, Nepal all the way to Vaasa, Finland. While he hadn’t initially planned to stay long-term, Finland eventually became his home. Over the years, he has lived in various cities, including Vaasa, Helsinki, and Turku. Now, Subash has settled in Finland with his wife and young son, appreciating the country as a nice place to raise a family.
Nowadays, there is a significant Nepalese population in Finland, though back in 2007 most were concentrated in Helsinki, making it difficult to find Nepali people in other cities. Since then, the community has grown, and now many Nepali individuals reside in various cities across Finland.
Life at Hidex and Future Aspirations
When reflecting on his time at Hidex, Subash highlights the supportive nature of his colleagues. He believes that the first year on the job can be a challenging learning curve, but with helpful coworkers, the transition to a new workplace and new tasks has been smooth. Looking ahead at professional development goals, Subash hopes to expand his knowledge by learning more about AI tools, which he sees as an exciting area for future growth.
Subash found it quite fascinating that employees in Finland could start working and learning simultaneously. A new employee didn’t have to hesitate before asking questions, and coworkers were always willing to help as much as they could. Another interesting aspect of Finnish work culture that Subash noticed was the various programs and events organized by employers. These provided opportunities for employees to get to know others, even those from different departments in the company.
Advice for Aspiring Developers & Life Outside Work
Subash offers some advice for individuals aspiring to become software developers: "Develop a growth mindset and be dedicated to acquiring new knowledge and skills."
While he enjoys the peaceful family life Finland offers, he acknowledges that the lack of a support system for international families can be challenging, especially for those with young children. Outside of work, he loves traveling and spending time outdoors. His free-time activities include going for walks in nature, fishing, visiting beaches, and playing badminton.
